Learning Outside the Classroom
Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) plays a central role within Dysart’s curriculum. It enables our pupils to generalise and practise the skills they have learned, and the knowledge they have acquired, in practical, real life settings. It provides pupils with enhanced opportunities to demonstrate the progress they have made and supports them to relate to the wider community by developing their social communication skills. LOtC covers the full range of experiences beyond the classroom walls. Whether it’s tending to the allotment in the school grounds, purchasing items for cooking at the local supermarket or gaining independence on school journey, LOtC has a pivotal part to play to help our children and young people achieve to the best of their ability.
“Pupils make excellent gains in their level of maturity and self-confidence, helped by visits to the community, work-related learning and residential experiences. In this way, they are very well prepared for moving on to the next stage in their lives.” (Ofsted 2009)
